The word ‘functional’ in the health and fitness industry is becoming more commonplace. Some health professionals are moving away from the more traditional forms of training that use machines or very isolated movements to ‘hit’ certain muscles as this can lead to restrictions in fitness, performance or progress during rehabilitation.
Functional exercise promotes fitness, performance and recovery from injury or illness, but more importantly it re-educates and re-dresses the balance of the muscles and joints. This reduces pressure on structures, lowering our risk of picking up injuries but when the body structures can work together we also experience rapid progress in improved fitness, balance, co-ordination and strength.
